Stray Dog (noun);

A stray dog is one that was previously domesticated and now lives in the wild due to loss, escape or abandonment. At stray dog differs from a feral dog in that a stray dog must have previously lived in a domestic environment, where as a feral dog was born and lives in the wild and is typically a descendent of a domesticated dog, many times a descendent of a stray dog.

In many parts of the world, islands in particular, where dogs are not native to the environment, feral dogs are decedents of stray dogs left behind by travelers and can have a very devastating effect on the native environment. This is why it is so important to be a responsible dog owner and not abandon your pets.
