Stolen property is something taken from a rightful owner by means of an unlawful manner. The legal terms for the action of obtaining stolen property are larceny, stealing, robbing, theft, grand theft, feltching or shoplifting if it's from a retail business.
Stolen property is a major concern to business as it can be the biggest expense, not only loses but in theft deterrent technology and additional employees for theft prevention and processing theft suspects. There are both state and federal task forces dedicated to theft, however the FBI will not become involved unless the amount is more than $250,000.
