A Warning For Potential Shoplifters
Shoplifting is no longer just brushed off with a with a warning. Shoplifting costs retail businesses approximately $13 billion a year, making shoplifting the largest financial threat to retail businesses. Due to this enormous cost of shoplifting, retail businesses have developed a no-tolerance policy towards shoplifters and typically press charges for every shoplifting incident, no matter the amount of goods shoplifted.
Cooperation with store security and the police can really help in the outcome of shoplifting charges. Becoming violent or fleeing will only worsen the situation and can result in more charges, possibly even felony charges, and a much more severe sentencing.
If you are caught shoplifting, the offense can remain on your record for years. Multiple offences can result in huge fines, jail time or even prison time. In some states, where the three strikes rule applies, if an offender with previous theft convictions is caught shoplifting, they can receive a life prison sentence for shoplifting a pair of $60 jeans...not worth it!
