What Is Shoplifting?

  • Shoplifting is the act of stealing property or goods that are being sold or on display at a retail business; "The retail store on the corner hired undercover security to reduce it's shoplifting problem"
  • Shoplifting is theft of property or goods from a retail establishment. The crime of shoplifting is typically handled by first store security then the police and the courts.

Impact Of Shoplifting

Shoplifting is not a victimless crime and is one of the most prominent threats for retail businesses. Shoplifting costs retail businesses approximately $13 billion a year. Unfortunately this cost of shoplifting is passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. Due to the enormous cost associated with shoplifting, retail businesses have to spend more money on high-tech surveillance systems and, of course, on security teams to operate and monitor the shoplifting surveillance systems and to survey, prevent and intercept shoplifting incidents. Most retail businesses have zero-tolerance policies towards shoplifting and will press charges no matter the cost of the goods shoplifted. Between the advancement of anti-shoplifting surveillance technology and aggressive prosecution of shoplifters, the shoplifting rate has reduced.
