Secure Disk Images
A secure disk image is the most secure method to protect files. A secure disk image is an encrypted casing around a folder, a file or files that requires a password for access. A secure disk image is very difficult to un-encrypt and is very time consuming. Typically only very important data or highly illegal files, such as child pornography, is worth this extensive amount of time it takes to un-encrypt a disk image. Typically a laptop thief will obtain any easy to get files containing financial or personal information that can be used or sold then sell the laptop on the black market or to an unsuspecting, innocent buyer.
Create a secure disk image on Mac
- In Finder, click 'File' then select 'New Window' in the drop down list -or- press the 'command + N' keys to open a new Finder window
- Select 'Applications'
- Select 'Utilities'
- Open 'Disk Utility'
- Click 'New Image' on the top bar of Disk Utility
- Name the new disk image, select the image size and select encryption type, typically the '128-bit AES encryption (recommended)' is plenty of security. It really takes an un-encrypting expert to hack into this.
Stolen Laptop Password Protection
Password protecting your laptop is a good step to keep less technically savvy thieves from accessing your personal files. A password protection makes it so the laptop requires a password every time it goes to sleep, a user has logged out or the computer has been turned off. As mentione, it keeps less savvy thieves out, a stolen laptop, however, can still be booted from another computer or USB device at which time the files are accessed.
